While I strive to include 15-20 minutes of deep meditation in my daily self-care practice, sometimes, life gets in the way. And at this moment, I’ve lost my sitting-in-lotus position-and-chanting discipline. This doesn’t mean, however, that I can’t take care of myself.
So last week, I tried something new: I cast my cares on my own private sea of 1,000 pounds of Epsom salt and 280 gallons of water for 90 blissful, silent minutes at the Los Angeles Float Clinic.
Why floating? For me, it’s an amazing experience that helps my body relax and my mind to slow. Lots of research points to how the three prongs of floating – Epsom salt, sensory deprivation, and gravity reduction – work together to accelerate psychical healing and promote deep relaxation, stress and pain relief, and mental acuity.
For my first session, I was able to my mind and find silence with no thoughts for 4-5 minutes at a time, which left me much calmer, peacefully settled in my thoughts, and more aware of my mind/body connections. I’m returning this week and will attempt to keep my silence for longer periods of time.
